Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre informed that President Biden will self-isolate at his Delaware home while continuing to fulfill his duties, after UnidosUS President Janet Murguía disclosed his positive COVID-19 test at a Las Vegas convention, during which Biden expressed regret for his absence.
Dr. Kevin O'Connor, Biden's physician, noted that the 81-year-old president experienced upper respiratory symptoms, including a runny nose, non-productive cough, and general malaise, and began treatment with Paxlovid following the diagnosis, as reported by the Associated Press.
President Biden was scheduled to address the UnidosUS event in Las Vegas to engage Hispanic voters ahead of the November election but instead departed for Delaware, where he had planned to spend a long weekend at his home in Rehoboth Beach.
His COVID-19 diagnosis comes amid heightened scrutiny of his health following a challenging debate with former President Donald Trump, raising concerns among Democrats about his fitness for another presidential term.
"I tested positive for COVID-19 this afternoon, but I am feeling well and appreciate everyone's well wishes. I will be isolating while I recover, and during this time I will continue working to serve the American people," Joe Biden assured on social media.
